Blog Evaluation

I think that the Blog turned out extremely well and because of this there is not that much that I would do differently if I were to do the blog again.

However if I were to do the blog again, I would choose more blogs to include as research as the ones that I have used currently don't contain enough information for me to base my blog on.

Another aspect that I would change would be that I would include more photos and videos because at the moment, most of my blog is text and this will more than likely make the audience get bored before they reach the end. if i included more photos and videos this would keep them interested as they would break up the text as well as making my blog more visually appealing.

Blog Mind Map and Influences

Target Audience

The target audience for this blog will be people interested in Rock music. This is because will be mainly about Different rock bands and what they are doing whether it be releasing an album or upcoming concerts and gigs.
I will also use this bog to showcase the work and research I do within my college course and the projects that I complete within this. This is so that all of my work is in one place for potential employers to easily locate and look at. I plan to update the blog weekly so that I am keeping people updated with things that I am currently working on.

Layout

Within the blog I plan to include pictures and videos, as to break up the text, as well as written descriptions of everything that I post. I will also include the URL's of the blogs that i have looked at as part of my research.

Colours

The colours that i will use for my blog will be dark colours such as black, purple and dark orange as these are the colours that best fit in with the Theme of Rock music theme.

Content

In my blog I will include tour dates of the bands, concert and ticket information, as well as past work of my own making. I will also include images and videos to make the blog more visually appealing to the target audience.

Image and Video Formats

While creating a blog, it is important to use the correct file types so that the blog looks as good as it possibly can and that the images and videos aren't distorted.

Jpeg

A Jpeg is an image file format which is the most used format for uploading images to the web. This is because it is the best format due to it having the best resolution possible in a small file size.

PNG Image

PNG's are good for plain text, line drawings, illustrations, and images with a few solid colours. Not suitable for most photography, as they have a much bigger file size than JPEGs.

Gif

Similar to PNGs. Using this format your limited to 256 colours, so it’s best not used for photography. Not as flexible as PNGs and generally bigger file size.

H.264 Video File Format

H.264 is a standard for Video Compression, and is currently one of the most commonly used formats for the recording, compression, and distribution of high definition video.

Image Resolution

Images for the web should always be 72dpi, as this is the maximum resolution your monitor can display. Using this setting makes your photos file size much smaller, and looks exactly the same (on screen) as the original. We also use RGB for our colour model, which uses varying tones of red, green and blue to create your colours.

Image Dimensions

Image dimensions are measured in pixels. Pixels are tiny squares on your monitor which together make up the image you are seeing. A typical size for a web image would be between 200 pixels – 800 pixels (max width or height). For background or header images you may want something a little larger, but never go beyond 1024 pixels wide or your files will be too big, and load slowly.

Copyright

Copyright

Copyright is legislation put in place by governments to protect the original owner of a piece of work from people stealing it and using it as their own.
Many websites use images from these sites to often break up text and/or make their websites/blogs more visually appealing to the viewer. This may however be breaking the law.
If the blog/website owner has not got the express written consent of the original owner, then they are breaking the law.
However, there are some exceptions to this rule, one of these exceptions is Royalty Free images;

Royalty Free

Royalty-free, or RF, refers to the right to use Copyrighted Material material or Intellectual Property without the need to payRoyalties or License Fees.
Some examples of Royalty free content can be images from sites such as Getty Images and iStockPhoto, as well as videos from sites such as BBCMotion and VideoBlocks.

Stock Images

A stock image is an image that is commercially available for use, a small fee may be payable to gain use of the image.

For a Project that I am currently working on at college is a 30 second live action advert for the energy drink from which I choose Monster.

While researching the brand I could not actually find any official advert for Monster, only fan made versions and most of these weren't worth watching let alone using them in my research. but I did however find one advert which was extremely well made. the video is about a group of friends trying to find the most fun way of getting from A to B and use parkour as their way of getting there.

What I like about this video is that it uses the drink to show that it will give you a boost so that you are able to do the tasks that you might not necessarily be able to do without it.
Something else that caught my eye about the advert was the amount of different camera angles used to give the impression that there is more scenes than there was. This also helps to create the illusion that they are traveling quite a distance all thanks to the drink.

Influence

My Influence for creating this blog was a number of other similar blogs that I have looked at as part of my research for a college project.

One of the blogs that appealed to me was one about the rock band Avenged Sevenfold;
http://avenged--sevenfold.tumblr.com/

One of the reasons that this particular blog appealed to me was the fact that it is about one of my all time favourite music artists. I like this blog because it uses a number of different techniques to make sure that as many people stay interested with the content on the page, this includes videos of the band and their songs, lots of UGC as well as the option to comment on a post or post yourself.

Another blog that I found interesting was one for the band Dragonforce, a heavy metal band from England.
http://www.myspace.com/dragonforce/blog

One of the things that I enjoyed about this blog is the way it uses dark colours to blend in with the genre of the bands music, Rock/Heavy Metal. it uses colours such as black and purple and these are the colours that both are associated with rock music, but also the colours I wish to use in my blog.
Another element of the blog that I enjoyed was that it had the option to listen to the band through a linked radio station which includes a number of the bands biggest hits.
A further aspect of the blog which I liked was the way in which the blog shows the cd's that the band have brought out as well as the track names on that album. This interested me because it gives even more information to the viewer who the blog is being targeted at.

Yet another blog I looked at was one about the heavy metal band Five Finger Death Punch (FFDP, 5FDP).
http://www.myspace.com/ffdp/blog

One of the reasons why i like this blog is that it also uses the music player feature which allows us to listen to FFDP's tracks through the inbuild radio station.
Another reason why I like this blog is because it gives the target audience in depth information about the band, tour dates, gigs and album releases etc.
A further reason I like it is because of its Facebook style format in that you can like and comment on other like minded people's posts as well as post to the blog yourself.

Another blog that I have looked at as part of my research is the technology review site TechCrunch;

One of the things that I liked about this blog is that there is the option to like each comment on Facebook. This is useful because it gives the target audience more options on ways to interact with the website.
Another thing that I liked about the blog is that there is a massive variation in what is posted, from Apple's new operating system to brand new laptops. This is a good feature because it gives the target audience a lot of information about upcoming technology and products that they might want to buy.

The final blog that I looked at was The Huffington Post;
What I liked about this blog is that it includes lots of information, but also a lot of pictures and videos that break up the text to make it less boring and more visually appealing for the target audience.
Another aspect which I liked was the fact that the blog gives you the option to like the page on Facebook, but also the individual comments posted by users.
A further aspect that i liked was all of the videos included on the blog, this is good because it helps to explain what has been posted on the blog but in a way which is easier to understand.
